The Katie Caples Foundation has partnered with University of Florida student organization the Big Heart Gators for an organ, tissue and eye donor registration drive April 11th on the University of Florida campus.
The Big Heart Gators and KCF are working closely with Donate Life Florida representatives who will be providing practical training and education to the Big Heart Gators. Donate Life Florida, the non-profit 501(C) (3) organization contracted by the State of Florida, Agency for Health Care Administration to create the state’s organ, tissue and eye donor registry, has permitted the club use of an app that will instantly add the new registrant to the State donor registry by scanning a State ID or driver license. In addition to registering new organ donors, the student volunteers will answer questions about organ donation with the intention of informing, educating and dispelling the myths associated with donation and transplantation.
The Big Heart Gators will reach out across campus at Fraternities, Sororities and a number of Student Organizations as well as man tables on campus during the week long drive. This organ donor registration drive is the second of its kind. In February of this year the Big Heart Gators launched the first campaign, registering 225 new organ donors and training 50 student advocates who will continue to spread the word about the impact of organ donation. One organ donor can save eight lives through solid organ transplant and enhance the lives of up to fifty more through soft tissue donation. The Big Heart Gators want people to know just how important their decision is regarding organ and tissue donation. To learn more visit the BHG Facebook page!
